Seaborne transportation of chemicals takes place in all parts of the world. The most important long haul trade lanes for chemical tankers are between the major chemical supply areas in the US, Northwest Europe, Singapore and the Middle East Gulf region, and the main chemical importing regions in Europe, Asia and North America. The Middle East including India and North America are expected to become more important regions in the chemical trade as a result of growth in the chemical plant and petroleum refinery capacity in these regions.
In the medium term, the shale gas development in the US is expected to have a positive effect on demand for long haul chemical tanker transportation. The customers of the chemical tanker operators are mainly producers or consumers of chemical products, e.g. major industrial chemical companies, oil companies and mining companies.
